CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Oct 8: Commercial malta farming has brought smile on the faces of hundreds of grassroots peasants in the district this season.

Sources said BARI-1 malta variety is popular among the grower for high production and good market prices.

Farmers can harvest the fruit within two to three years after planting the pant.

Growers said the plants need regular care but do not require strong irrigation.

According to the Second Crops Development Project (SCDP) office sources, cultivators have been growing the citrus fruit since 2013 and making a handsome profit every season.

BARI-1 malta is being cultivated over 68 hectares of land in the area this season.

Locally-produced malta is transported to different district across the country due to good demand.

DAE Deputy Director Md Monzurul Huda Chapainawbganj is well-known for growing quality malta.

Many growers have attained financial solvency by growing the juicy fruit on a large tract of land.
