Lightning kills three across country

Two farmers were killed in separate incidents of lightning in Sunamganj and Habiganj districts along with another college student in Chuadanga on Monday.

A farmer was killed after being hit by a thunderbolt at Jamkhola haor in Dakkhin Sunamganj upazila in Sunamganj around 11 am.

The deceased was identified as Md Yeahia, 42, son of Md Elius Ali of Raipur village in Borochatul union of Kanaighat upazila.

Md Jakir Hossain, sub-inspector of Dakkhin Sunamganj police station, said a streak of thunderbolt struck the farmer while he was cutting paddy in a field around 11 am, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Habiganj, another farmer Shamsul Haque, 30, son of Gazi Rahman of Japu Kornopara, was killed as a lightning hit him on a paddy filed in a haor area near the Sutki River around 11 am, said a UNB report.

Thirdly, a college student was killed and his father injured by lightning at Kutubpur village under Sadar upazila of Chuadanga district on the same day.

The victim was identified as Hasibul Islam, 25, son of Majedul Islam hailed from the village, according to a BSS report.

Locals said thunderbolt struck Hasibul and Majedul as they were bringing paddy from their crop field amid rain. Hasibul died on the spot and his father received injury during the incident.

Later, wounded Majedul was admitted to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
