GOPALGANJ, Oct 25: Harvest of short-duration BINA Dhan-16 begins at Mahayashpur under Kasiani upazila in the district.

According to the sub-center of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Gopinathpur under Sadar upazila, about 200 farmers of Moheshpur union  under Kashiani upazila are involved in farming of the short-duration paddy variety. This variety can be harvested in 100 days of its plantation.

About 18 acres of land had been brought under the cultivation of the paddy this season, sources added.

Md Sefaur Rahman, scientific officer of the BINA sub-center, said cultivation of BINA Dhan-16 is profitable. It takes few days to be harvested, requires low production cost and salt-tolerant.

H M Khairul Bashir, senior scientific officer of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Gopalganj, said BINA Dhan-16 is a high yielding, rice is testy and farmers can grow it easily in three times a year on the same crop land, he added.

Meanwhile, our Magura correspondent adds: Incessant rainfall has damaged a large tract of Aman field in the district.

Magura DAE said a total of 57,850 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation of Aman paddy with a production target of 169,375 tonnes. Of the total, around 5,750 hectares of land have already been damaged due to the recent rainfall.

Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Magura official Baharul Islam said, "We yet not to get any instruction to sanction land for the affected Aman growers. If we get such instruction we will take immediate steps to sanction load for the farmers."
