NAOGAON, May 23: Around 60 families in Mohadevpur Upazila under the district have attained solvency through making hand-fans.
Local sources said the 60 families of Bhalain village in Mohadevpur upazila are producing a large number of fans and supplying those to different districts, earning handsome amounts.
Wholesalers from Dhaka, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Natore, Chattogram, Khulna, Jashore and many other districts buy fans from here and run a good business the whole year.
Asma Begum, Seema and Monira of the village informed from January to February, they collect palm leaves and process them to make fans.
"We start selling these fans in March and the sale continues till November," they added.
Golam Rasul, a young fan-maker of the area said one worker can make maximum 100 to 120 fans per day.
The production cost of a fan is Tk 12 to Tk 14 while they sell per piece for Tk 15 to Tk 20 on the retail market. Wholesale buyers buy these per hundred for Tk 1,500 to Tk 1,800, he added.
Shefali, Kohinur and Mala of the same village said they are leading a better life now-a-days after being engaged in the hand-fan making profession.
Chairman of Uttargram Union Parishad Abid Sarkar stated if the people here engaged in hand-fan making can get bank loans on easy terms, they would be able to run a more profitable business.
