Number of flower shops is increasing in the district town.
Sources said there are over 40 flower shops in the town while it was only six to eight a decade ago.
Once the flower business was seasonal due to its short demand, but now it is a good venture around the year, told Sumon Saha, owner of a flower shop in Victoria Road area.
"Varieties of flowers are essential at different occasion like Eid, Puja, 'Pahela Baishakh', 'Pahela Flagoon' and some national days", he added.
Demand of rose, marigold, tube-rose, gerbera, and some orchids are high, said Jahirul Islam, a shop owner said.
Traders generally bring flowers from Jessore and Savar. A good amount of flower is also collected from different gardens in the district, he said.
Sources said commercial flower cultivation is also gaining popularity in the district due to high demand.
Parvin Sultana of Kandila village under Tangail Sadar upazila said she cultivates gerbera in her garden on commercial basis. "I have also 150 orchid plants of different varieties", she added.
Parvin said she got around 3,000 flowers from the garden in a week during January to March. She sells gerbera at Tk 3.0 to Tk 4.0 to the traders.
Market sources said rose is being sold at Tk 5.0 to Tk 10, a garland of marigold comprising 25 to 30 flowers at Tk 20 to Tk 25 at local shops.
A good number of traders said flower business is profitable. It is increasing gradually across the district. People from all walks of life love to purchase flower.
