Fish farming expanding in Cumilla, many youths become self-reliant

CUMILLA, July 15: Fish cultivation is gaining ground in the district.

Sources said around 0.21 million tonnes of fish are produced in the district annually. A good number of people have attained financial solvency by farming varieties of fishes in the open water bodies.

Officials at the district fisheries office said fish farming is playing a vital role in poverty reduction in the area. Grassroots people are earning a handsome profit from the venture.

According to the office sources, 84,424 ponds in 17 upazilas of the district are producing 155,738 tonnes of fish every season.

Office sources said about 90,000 tonnes of fish are being produced in 70 water bodies of 4,000 hectares of land in Daudkandi, Muradnagar, Meghna, Homna, Titas and Chandina upazilas of the district.

Besides, fish farming in paddy fields is also popular in the area, sources added.

A good number of farmers said many unemployed youths have become self-reliant by fish farming. Sarputi, tilapia, ruhi, katol, mrigel, silvercarp, and pangas are most popular fish varieties among the cultivators here, they added.

District fisheries officer Abdur Rahman said Cumilla is in a special position in fish production across the country. The sector is expanding every year for high profit.
