Farmers busy harvesting jute to get ready for T-Aman farming

BOGURA, July 25: Farmers in the district are passing busy time harvesting jute to get ready to cultivate T-Aman on the same land.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 12,685 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation this year aiming to get around 1,000 tonnes of output.

Crop on over 9,000 hectares of land has already been harvested, DAE officials added.

Tosha is the most popular jute variety in the area as it requires low production cost, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman.

Johirul Islam of Sonatola upazila, said, "I grow jute well every season as soil of the upazila is suitable for the crop. I have cultivated jute on some three bighas of land this year and harvested all of them before the flood."

Farmer Hossain Ali under Dhunot upazila said he is happy to get satisfactory production and price of jute this year. He said he will expand the crop cultivation next year.

During a recent visit to different villages in the district this correspondent saw farmers started jute processing.

DAE official said the newly-harvested jute has started appearing in the market.

It is sold at Tk 1,300 to Tk 1,400 per maund depending on quality and variety.
