DU student commits 'suicide' after jumping off from campus building

The body of a Dhaka University student has been found next to a building of the business studies faculty with police remained unsure about the cause of the death, but a faculty member claimed he jumped off the building.

A teacher of the business faculty, requesting anonymity said, “CCTV camera footage shows that the boy jumped off the MBA Building.”

“He was suffering from some mental problems. Some sleeping pills were found in his bag. I think he jumped off to commit suicide,” the teacher said.

He has been identified as Tanvir Rahman, who jumped from the rooftop of the nine-storey building on Saturday.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital or DMCH around 9 pm, where the doctors declared him dead, Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Zafar Ali Biswas confirmed.

Hailing from Brahmanbarhia, Tanvir was a student of the evening MBA course of accounting and information system department. He lived in Sheweraparha in Dhaka.

Russell Mia, an employee of the faculty, said Tanvir is seen getting on the rooftop of the building in the footage.

“He is seen jumping off, keeping aside his phone and moneybag,” he added.

Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said the authorities informed Tanvir's parents about the incident.

“Police will investigate whether he committed suicide,” he said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sarder said they suspect Tanvir died by suicide, reports bdnews24.

Earlier, Inspector Zafar said Tanvir was found ‘critically injured, but the circumstances were not clear’.

Police were investigating whether it was a suicide, a murder or an accident, he added.
