BOGURA, Aug 13: Farmers of Dhunot upazila of the district have made profit of over Tk 135 million this season by cultivating Aus paddy.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said some 14,000 peasants cultivated the paddy on 12,825 hectares of land this season and got 1,16,250 maunds of production.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer Abdus Sobhan said, "We encourage the growers to bring more cropland under Aus production as it is profitable venture."
Aus cultivators had made Tk 90 million profit last year from 3937 hectares of land, he added.
Nur Islam of Arkatia village said he usually get 18 to 20 maunds of Aus paddy from a bigha of land.
The farmers said growers spend Tk 4,000 to Tk 5,000 to cultivate Aus on a bigha of land. Each maund of newly-harvested paddy is being sold at Tk 1200 to Tk 1300 in the retail market across the upazila.
Upazila agriculture officer Mohammad Zahangir Alam said farmers some 150 farmers received incentive for Aus farming this season.
