A trauma centre building in Gopalganj is being damaged due to indifference between PWD and the health department for seven years.
The local people injured in road accidents are being deprived of emergency treatment. The Civil Surgeon of Gopalganj said the activities of the trauma centre will start after the recruitment of manpower.
A project to build a trauma centre along the Dhaka-Khulna highway in the Ghonapara area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila was undertaken for better treatment of the people injured in road accidents.
Work on the four-storey trauma centre building began in March 2014. Although the construction work of the building was completed in December 2016, partial work is yet to be completed. It is not yet clear when the trauma centre will be operational.
Now furniture and various portions of the building are being damaged as it is lying uncared for. It has become a safe haven for drug addicts.
According to the locals, the people injured in road accidents have to go to Dhaka or Khulna Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment as the activities have not been started at the trauma centre in Gopalganj.
Executive Engineer of Gopalganj Public Works Department (PWD) Amit Kumar Biswas said, "The construction work of the Trauma Centre building was completed in December 2018. The building was handed over to the health department in January 2020."
Gopalganj Civil Surgeon Sujat Ahmed said, "Although the work of the trauma centre building has been completed, partial work is still undone. It is not going to be launched due to a manpower crisis. He also said the activities of the trauma centre will start after the recruitment of manpower."
