Commercial maize farming gaining popularity

MAGURA, Apr 24: Commercial maize cultivation is gaining popularity in the district.

Sources said low production cost and high market price are the main reasons for expansion of the farming of the crop.

Magura DAE sources said a total of 120 hectares of land have been brought under maize cultivation this season with the production target of 950 tonnes of maize.

Farmer Babul Fakir of Akshi village under Magura Sadar upazila said he has brought two bighas of land under the farming of the crop. He expressed the hope to produce 60 maunds of maize and make a profit of Tk 50,000.

Diderul Islam, a poultry feed factory owner in Sonatondi village said, "Maize is a must in producing poultry feed. Earlier we collected maize from other district. But now it is being produced in Magura."

Magura DAE official Gobinda Kumar Zoarder said, "Maize cultivation is on rise in the district. We expect a bumper production this season. The department provides all necessary supports to the growers."
