Grassroots people in the district are showing more interest in cattle rearing on commercial basis as it has been proved more profitable to them.

Sources said a good number of unemployed youths have attained self-reliance by raising cows.

Former UP chairman of Chowhali village under Tangail Sadar said, "It is a good sign for our society that the unemployed educated youths are finding way to become self-sufficient by themselves. Cattle rearing is expanding fast in the char areas."

In the mean time many boys tried in different ways to become self reliant. But the cattle rearing business got success in a short period.

Haroon- ur Rashid of Bawshied village under Sadar upazila said, "I made a healthy profit from the sale of an oxen in the last Eid- ul-Azha market. It is a profitable venture."

Sources said the seasonal cattle rearer in the district generally rear a cow for one or two years and then they sell it in the local market.

Local livestock office sources said char people of the district are rearing cows applying natural cattle fattening method. They do not use steroid drugs on their cattle heads. Local farmers feed their cows green grass in the riverbank areas.

District livestock officer Dr Abu Sayed said there are 388 enlisted cow farms in the district, where some 10,75,000 cattle heads have been reared. Besides, many small cattle farms are here which are not listed.

Commercial cattle rearing has made many people financially solvent, he added.
