Char people attain solvency from cucumber cultivation

BOGRA, Nov 14: Hundreds of char people of the mighty Jamuna in Sarikandi, Sonatola and Dhunot upazilas of the district has attained financial self-reliance by cultivating cucumber.

Cucumber was cultivated on over 600 hectares of land in the three areas with an expectation to produce around 3,60,000 maunds of fresh yield, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman.

In a recent visit to some char areas this correspondent found most of the cucumber farmers were passing busy in harvesting the produce. Traders purchase the vegetable from the farmer directly at Tk 700 to Tk 800 per maund and send them to different kitchen markets across the country.

Farmer Moazzem Hossain of Tengra char under Sariakandi upazila said, "I have brought over two bighas of land under cucumber cultivation this season spending over Tk 40,000." He expects to get 400 maunds of production, he added.

"I would able to make a good profit within a few weeks if the price of the item remains stable." he further said.

A good number of farmers of the district said favourable weather condition helped get bumper cucumber output this season.

Upazila agriculture officer of Sariakandi Sahaduzzaman said farmers started harvesting cucumber from last week. They are delighted over the bumper production and fair market prices of the produce.
