Bumper output makes chilli farmers happy

BOGURA, Dec 26: Bumper yield of chilli has made hundreds of grassroots peasants in the district happy this season.

Sources said chilli production in the district has exceeded all the records in the past.

Around 35 maunds of chilli have been achieved from a bigha of land this year while the amount was 30 maunds last year.

Farmer Smyama Podo under Kahaloo upazila said he cultivated the item on 22 decimals of land spending Tk 13,000 this season.

He said he has already sold some 20 maunds of crop at Tk 45,000.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said chilli farming is popular among the framers of Nandigram, Dupchanchia, Shibganj, Kahaloo, Sonatola, Adamdighi, Sherpur, Gabtoly, Sariakandi, Shajahanpur and Sadar upazilas.

Moderate climate helped boost chilli production in the area, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Aizur Rahman.

"We have provided all sorts of help to the growers in this connection", the official added.

Mr Rahman further said chilli cultivation is popular in the district as the growers get repeated output every season.
