BRRI-74 paddy production on the rise in Magura

MAGURA, May 02: BRRI-74 paddy has raised hope among the farmers of Jashore region. A farmers' field-day on the paddy variety held in Angardoha village under Magura Sadar recently.

HarvestPlus and Socio Economic Health Education Organisation (CEHEO) jointly arranged the event.

HarvestPlus regional director Mujibur Rahman said seven to eight tonnes of yield can be achieved from a hectare of land. The variety is less vulnerable to blast disease. It has high nutrition value. One kg of BRRI-74 rice contains 24.2 milligram of zinc.

A child can get three to five milligram of zinc while an adult woman eight to nine milligram zinc from per day consumption, he added.

Moreover this rice enhances appetite. This rice also ensures normal growth of children. It is also helpful for pregnant women.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Jashore, sources said a total of 5,000 hectares of land were brought under the farming of BRRI-74 in Jeshore region this season.

Farmer Rezaul Islam of Angordoha village said he achieved 20 maunds of production from 20 decimals of land this year.

Magura DAE deputy director Partha Protim Shaha said farming of BRRI-74 is profitable. Growers should expand its production for more profit.
