Brahmaputra crosses danger level in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: Flood water from the north inundated Fulchharighat — Focus Bangla

Water level of the Brahmaputra crossed its danger mark today morning inundating the river basin including char areas, reports BSS.

According to sources, water level of other three major rivers Ghagot, Karotoa and Teesta flowing through the district rose sharply in last 24 hours till 9 am on Sunday.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the water level in the Brahmaputra rose by 12 cm and in Ghagot 17 cm, in Karatoa 21 cm and in Teesta 05 cm during the period.

Brahmaputra was flowing 02 cm above its danger level at Fulchharighat point of the district this morning.

Ghagot was flowing 23 cm below the danger mark at New Bridge Road point of the district town, the Karotoa 174 cm at Katakhali Bridge point of Gobindaganj uapzila and the Teesta 129 cm this morning.

With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra, the river basin areas of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazila had been inundated and the standing crops particularly jute and the vegetables went under flood water.

With the rise of water level in the river, the erosion took serious turn at many places along the western side of the river including Kapasia,

Kamarjani, Gidari, Urya, Gozaria, Shaghata and Holdia unions creating immense sufferings and much anxiety.

Executive Engineer of BWDB Mahbubur Rahman said as the Brahmaputra was flowing over its danger mark, the officials and the employees had been kept alert to protect the embankment.

As the Ghagot was flowing just below its danger level, security measures have been tightened at the town protection embankment so that no vested quarters could cut the embankment which may cause immense sufferings to the Gaibandha municipality, he added.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Goutam Chandra Pal said the district administration is ready with relief materials and manpower to address the flood situation in the district.

The DC added they are monitoring the situation closely and briefing the higher authority concerned about the latest situation.
