Bottle gourd cultivation expanding in Rangpur for high yield

RANGPUR, Sept 25: Farmers of different upazilas in the district are becoming financially benefited by growing bottle gourd on their land in recent years.

Due to congenial weather, low labour cost and high demand, farming of the vegetable is on the rise across the district.

Sources informed the farmers of the region have geared up vegetables farming including bottle gourd during the current season with much enthusiasm as they made huge profit last year from the cultivation of the same.

The farmers of the district are expected to attain a good yield of their produces this season as they prefer farming vegetable to other crops, sources further said.

While visiting some areas of the district this FE correspondent found the farmers busy taking care of their vegetable fields.

Many delighted farmers were also found harvesting their produces which produced abundantly in their fields.

Shahin Mia, a vegetable grower in Palichara area under Rangpur Sadar, said he has been farming bottle gourd for the last five years.

He is fortunate enough farming this vegetable, as its farming gives him good profit, he added.

Halim, another vegetable cultivator of Nabdiganj village at Pirgachha upazila said he has already earned Tk 15,000 by selling bottle gourd, produced in his lands.

He is optimistic of earning more profit during rest of the season, he added.

Everyday, from the region a huge quantity of vegetables including bottle gourd are being sent to the capital and some other cities of the country, sources said.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources due to good profit farming of bottle gourd and some other varieties of vegetables is increasing across the region in recent years.

The department is giving the growers necessary advices as well as other assistances to enhance vegetable farming across the region, sources added.

The vegetable growers alleged that owing to lack of preservation facilities they have to face difficulties with their produce.

If they get adequate preservation facilities they would earn more profit, they added.
