BOGRA, Nov 21: A good number of peasants across the district have been growing jute leaves as a vegetable on commercial basis.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source, the leafy vegetable is being grown on around 225 hectares of land this season.
"I have brought some three decimals of land under the cultivation of the vegetable. I have earned Tk 2,300 from the sale of the item," said farmer Aabrul Islam under Sadar upazila of the district.
The leafy vegetable is being sold at Tk 25 to Tk 30 per kg in the local kitchen markets, said another farmer Sammad Hossain of Madnai village under Kahaloo upazila.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said, "To encourage the marginal poor farmers we distribute incentive items so they could cultivate the vegetable on more lands."
