Bitter gourd cultivators making profit in Bogura district

BOGURA, July 08: Bitter gourd cultivators of Bogura district are making profit due to its good market price this season.

Rampant soaring market price of the crops delights hundreds of marginal peasants, said Sub-Assistance Agriculture Officer Hamidul Islam adding that the kitchen market monitors has taken effective to make the price high.

In a visit on Sunday at different big kitchen markets across the region the correspondent of the FE found that the growers are making pile with the crops from very early in the morning as the wholesalers rush the market early in the morning.

Each mound of the daily necessary food item bitter gourd is being sold at Tk 1,400 to 1,500 in the wholesale markets. Everyday, some 20 to 30 loaded trucks with the crops are being sent from the area.

The farmers along with the labourers are passing busy time to harvest the crops from the field as the matured bitter gourd may be rotten or ripen if they don't harvest timely.

Meanwhile, the wholesalers are seen to packet the sacks with the fresh bitter gourd to send them different districts mitigating the local demand in Mohasthan bazar, Baikal bazar, Goderpara and Shekerkola area.

Good number peasants of the district have brought a revolutionary change growing the crops this season, said farmer Akram Hossain, 42, under Sherpur upazila.

He again said, the farmers have to invest Tk 30,000 to 40,000 to grow a bigha of land. They can earn over Tk 0.1 million as profit mitigating production cost from the same land if the crops grow well.

The crops is being sent in various places including Dhaka, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Chattagra and Narayanganj mitigating the demand of the area.

Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said bitter gourd growers are mostly delighted due to its good market price and bumper production this season. The farmers have been provided necessary agri-input to grow the crops well, he added.
