MAGURA, Apr 21: A good number of farmers of Uzgram, Moghi and Ramnagar villages in the district have successfully produced BINA-17 paddy.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said some 60 hectares of land were brought under the farming of BINA-17 in the district for the first time.
Sources said growers have achieved a bumper production of the paddy as they already have started harvesting the crop. An estimated production target is 750 tonnes.
The Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) sources said BINA-17 was cultivated in the district for the first time on experimental basis. Around 30 maunds of yield can be achieved from a bigha (33 decimals) of land while it is 20 maunds for the local Boro varieties.
BINA-17 is less vulnerable to root rot, blast or Mazra attack. Plants remain strong after storm and thundershower.
Farmer Moksed Mondal of Ramnagar village under Sadar upazila said he brought four bighas of land under the farming of BINA-17 paddy and achieved a bumper production. He said he got 130 maunds of production.
Scientific officer of Magura BINA sub-centre Shampa Rani Ghosh said senior scientific officer of the institute Dr Snigdha Roy is the originator of the variety. Soil and weather of the district are suitable for the paddy.
"We have achieved an outstanding success in producing BINA-17 here for the first time. If the variety gains popularity across the country, paddy production will be increased on a high scale", she added.
