Beekeepers in Pabna, Sirajganj eye massive profit this season

PABNA, Dec 19: More than 700 beekeepers in different area of Pabna and Sirajganj districts are expecting to make a huge profit this season.

Sub-assistance agriculture of DAE, Chatmohor upazila, Hasan Mahmud Hossainy said a bumper mustard yield can be achieved in the areas as the bees are a great aid in pollination.

The method is generally applied for growing Maghi mustard variety.

President of Northern Apiculture Samity Zahangir Alam said they are rearing European hybrid Apace Melifera bee as it gives more honey. More than 60,000 boxes have been set up in Chatmohor, Banguar, Atghoria, Salonga, Kazipur and Faridpur upazilas to produce quality honey.

In a recent visit, this correspondent found each kg of quality honey is being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 220 across Pabna.

A good number of beekeepers said they do not get a good market price of their produce due to availability of imported ones. They said the authority concerned should keep deep eye on the honey market to expand the sector.

Deputy Director of DAE, Pabna, Bibhuti Bhushan Sarker said apiculture is flourishing in the area as a good numbers of people are engaged with it. Beekeepers have been making a handsome profit every season over the last few years.
