BOGURA, Feb 19: Smooth movement of both vehicles as well as pedestrians has been disrupted as a bailey bridge over the Garamara Canal at Mahatpara village on Dhunat-Sherpur road in the district has collapsed recently.

Commuter Adul Islam under Sherpur upazila said, "We are in a serious problem. The truck drivers do not obey any rules."

A truck loaded with sand has fallen into the canal water after breaking the bridge as it did not heed to the prohibition of the Roads and Highways Department. The truck sank underneath the bridge, he said.

The accident took place at around 1.00 pm on Tuesday last. No vehicles on the Dhunat-Sherpur route can cross the canal after collapsing the bridge.

According to local sources, the 66-metre-long bailey bridge was constructed on the Garamara Canal at Mathpara village on the Dhunat-Sherpur road in 1992.

Since construction, heavy vehicles have been crossing over the bridge. Due to this, the bridge was damaged. The bridge breaks down four to five times a year and the traffic stops. The RHD authorities repeatedly repaired the damaged bridge.

Due to lack of alternative routes, road communication with Bogura, Dhunat, Mathurapur, Jorshimul, Gosibari, Dekuria and Kazipur upazilas has been disconnected.

Officer in-charge (OC) of the Dhunat Police Station Ismail Hossain said police had been deployed on both sides of the collapsed bridge to avoid all sorts of minor accident.
