8,931 tonnes of mustard yield in Sylhet div this season

SYLHET, Apr 12: A good yield of mustard has been achieved in different areas of Sylhet division this year. Harvest of the crop has already completed while the total area cultivated was 7443 hectares of land in all the four districts of the division, official sources informed on Thursday afternoon.

The harvest reports show on average 1.2 tonnes of mustard per hectares had been produced in the districts of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj while the per hectare yield in Sunamganj district was albeit better. However, the division's average yield has been stated to be at 1.2 tonnes per hectare, the official informed. The yield stood at about 8931 tonnes.

Per hectare yield would have been better since the farmers suffered a little due to late preparation of their lands for the crop, said an official at the Sylhet divisional office of DAE. The DAE had set some demonstration plots in different areas to woo the common and new farmers in the crop, since huge tracts of land remain uncultivated in greater Sylhet during Rabi season.

The official however said, although it is slow the farming had been on rise in the Sylhet division whereas it was neglected just years ago. Many of the farmers however, were found interested on the crop due to scope of extra earning through honey collection.

This year the yield has been estimated to be 8931 tonnes from 7,443 hectares of land in the four districts of the division.

The total includes 3,114 tonnes from 2595 hectares in Sylhet, 1320 tonnes from 1100 hectares in Moulvibazar, 2340 tonnes from 1950 hectares in Habiganj and 2157 tonnes from 1798 hectares in Sunamganj district, regional report of the DAE stated.

The DAE had earlier targeted for bringing over 7,200 hectares of land under Mustard farming this season in the division.

A good number of apiculturists had collected honey from the bee boxes, kept in the mustard lands in Habiganj, Sylhet and Sunamganj, the official informed further.
