GOPALGANJ, Dec 26: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the district has taken a massive programme to grow Boro paddy on 80,690 hectares of land this season with a production target of 3,98,742 tonnes of paddy.
According to officials sources, of the total, hybrid variety will be cultivated on 50,640 hectares, Upshi on 30,020 hectares and other local varieties on 30 hectares of land.
Around 85,560 farmers in all the five upazilas of the district are involved with the cultivation of Boro, sources said.
Prodip Halder, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Raghunathpur Block under Sadar upazila said farmers are working hard in their field. Most paddy growers in the district use modern technology in growing the crop.
Mohammad Ali Mollah of Digaarkul village under Gopalganj Sadar said the DAE has provided all necessary support among the paddy cultivators.
The department also supplied quality seeds to make the farming programme a success, he said.
The grower further said he is farming HIRA-2 variety (super hybrid) on two bighas of land and expecting about 100 maunds of paddy.
Samir Kumar Gashwami, deputy director (Agriculture), said, "We are hopeful of getting a good yield this season."
