JHENAIDAH: A total of 34 landless and insolvent freedom fighters' (FFs) families from six upazilas in the district got houses named 'Bir Nibas'.
The total cost of construction of the houses stood at Tk 30.90 million.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) implemented the construction work from FY 2013-14 to FY 2018-19.
On completion of construction, the houses were handed over to the freedom fighters' family members across the district.
Of the total, six houses were built in Sadar upazila, 12 in Shailkupa, five in Moheshpur and Kaliganj each and three in Harinakundu and Maheshpur upazila each.
Freedom fighter Md Elahi Bakhsh from Luxmipur villager under Ganna union in Sadar upazila has recently received a house.
Elahi Bakhsh said, "I do not have the ability to construct a house to live with my family members."
"I have got this house as a gift of Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina. The house is my pride possession," he added.
"Not only that, we, the freedom fighters are now receiving more allowance and other facilities. The PM has treated the FFs of this country with due respect," he added.
According to sources, every 500-square feet house has two bedrooms, a dining room, a kitchen, a cow shed, a poultry shed and a tube well.
Executive Engineer of LGED, Jhenaidah Md Shamsuzzaman said the PM has taken initiative to make 'Bir Nibas' (house for valiant freedom fighter) for those freedom fighters who have no capability of building house on their own.
