15,000 hectares of land brought under wheat cultivation in Panchagarh

A total of 15,000 hectares of land have been brought under wheat cultivation this season in the district with a production target of 62,000 metric tonnes of wheat.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to achieve the bumper wheat production in the district during the current season because of favourable climate.

Last year, wheat cultivation target was five thousand of land, DAE sources said. Of the total land, 7,000 hectares of land have been cultivation Prodip variety, 4,000 hectares of land under Bijoy, 2,500 hectares of land under Sotapdi and 6,500 hectares of land under Bari- 1,2,3 variety.

DAE Deputy director Sheikh Abu Bakkar Siddik told BSS wheat cultivation has increased this year then the last year, because less expensive of wheat cultivation..

Farmers Abdul Majid, Subash Chandra of village Sabuspara under Debiganj Upazila of the district said that at least 10 maunds of wheat can be harvested from one bigha of land.

Each maund of wheat is sold at minimum Taka 800 to 1200. Farmer Abdul Majid said that last year I got Taka 8000 by selling of wheat from one bigha of land.

The DAE has supplied all necessary seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other agriculture inputs at a free of cost among the farmers to achieve the production target.

Besides, the DAE has also imparted training to the farmers to make them acquainted with the modern methods of wheat cultivation, reports BSS.
