Traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway has been slowed due to rain overnight and disrepair on the roads.

Congestion was also reported on a 1.5 kilometre stretch of the Dhaka-Chiottagong Highway near the Meghna-Gomoti Bridge on Sunday morning.

Both sides of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway have been affected by the rains since Saturday night, causing congestion from Kaliakoir’s Chandra to Mirzapur, said Salna Highway Police OC Hossain Sarkar.

“Vehicles are moving in long lines."

Potholes have formed on various sections of all four lanes of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

“Water is pooling in the potholes and also slowed traffic,” the OC said.

A stalled car on the highway at Gazipur's Kaliakoir caused further delays as vehicles moving in both directions were forces to share a single lane, reports bdnews24.com.

“Despite regular repairs by the Road Transport and Highways Division, there has been damage due to the rain,” said Gorai Highway Police OC Khalilur Rahman. “This has slowed traffic.”

“Vehicles are moving slowly from Tongi to the Chandana intersection,” said Naojor Highway Police OC Abdul Hai. “Law enforcers are working to restore regular traffic.”

According to the Comilla Eastern Highway Superintendent of Police Paritosh Ray, a 1.5 km line of traffic stretches along the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway from the toll plaza on the Meghna-Gomoti Bridge.

A truck stalling in Comilla’s Padiar Bazar area around 6:45am led to the congestion, police said.

Though movement sped up after the obstruction was cleared, there was still heavy congestion around the bridge.

“We have told the toll plaza to release vehicles as soon as possible and are trying our best to speed up traffic,” said Paritosh Ray.
