CJ SK Sinha off to Australia

Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha issued a statement on Friday night before leaving Dhaka for Australia following two and a half months of discussions and criticisms surrounding him.

He left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by a Singapore Airlines flight at 12:00am, said Inspector Abdul Jabbar, officer-in-charge of immigration police at the Airport, reports UNB.

In the statement issued, he said he was 'physically well, but embarrassed' by the criticism of the ruling Awami League leaders over the verdict that repealed the 16th amendment they brought to the Constitution.

The Chief Justice went on a one-month leave beginning on September 3 on health grounds.

The Chief Justice was widely criticised by ministers and ruling party leaders for his observations made in the verdict that had annulled the 16th amendment to the Constitution.

After the government announced his 'sick leave', the BNP alleged the government forced him to go on the leave for upholding the verdict, reports bdnews24.com.

SK Sinha assumed office on January 17, 2015 as the country's 21st Chief Justice. He will go on retirement on January 31 next.
