Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon said the wastes of sacrificial animals will be removed within 24 hours on Eid-ul-Azha.

“We hope to remove the wastes of sacrificial animals within 24 hours,” said the mayor at a meeting in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com.

The meeting was arranged by the two city corporations at the Nagar Bhaban in the absence of Dhaka North Mayor Annisul Huq, currently abroad for medical treatment.

Eid holidays of waste management workers were cancelled to ensure swift cleaning, Sayeed Khokon said.

He asked the people to use the 1,174 spots—625 in the north and 549 in the south—to perform the ritual. The two city corporations have specified these spots to speed up the clean-up.

However, there was no hard and fast rule that one could not perform the ritual outside the marked zones, he added.

“Please use the specified areas to help us remove the wastes faster. In case you perform the ritual inside your building, keep the wastes inside sacks provided by the city corporations and then place them outside your house,” the mayor said.

Dhaka North City Corporation will supply 455,000 sacks and Dhaka South City Corporation 250,000 to its residents before Eid, according to the mayor.

Dhaka will witness the slaughtering of around 475,000 cattle this year, Mayor Khokon said. “That will pile up around 25,000 tonnes of extra wastes in the capital.”
