Cabinet okays proposal to sign nuclear weapon ban treaty

The Cabinet Monday approved a proposal for signing the "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons", to be signed on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly session in New York.

 

The approval was given in the weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

 

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will sign the treaty on behalf of Bangladesh during the 72nd UN General Assembly (UNGA) this month.

 

UNGA adopted the treaty in July this year. As per the agreement, it will prohibit a full range of nuclear weapon-related activities, including development, test, production, as well as the use or threat of use of these weapons.

 

Alam said 122 member states of the UN including Bangladesh agreed to sign the treaty, reports BSS and UNB.

 

The Cabinet also approved a proposal for signing an agreement between Bangladesh and the UAE titled 'Air Services Agreement between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates'.

 

The Cabinet Secretary said the agreement would be drafted in both Bengali and Arabic.

 

Under the proposed new agreement, more than one flight operators nominated by both countries apart from the national flag carriers of Bangladesh and the UAE would be able to operate flights.

 

The Minister of Communication of the UAE and Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh would sign the agreement on behalf the respective countries.

 

The cabinet was also informed of the preparations of Bangladesh to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

At the beginning of the meeting, the Cabinet adopted a condolence motion at the death of legendary singer Abdul Jabbar.
