By-polls to Kurigram-3 Wednesday

The by-polls to Kurigram-3 constituency will be held on Wednesday.

The constituency fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party MP AKM Mayeedul Islam.

Awami League candidate Prof MA Matin and Jatiya Party contender Dr Akkas Ali Sarkar are running in the polls with 'boat' and 'plough' symbols respectively.

The Election Commission has already completed all preparations to conduct the by-polls to the parliamentary seat-27 in a peaceful manner. The balloting will be held from 8am to 4pm without any break, reports UNB.

A total of 363,075 voters will be able to exercise their franchise through 159 polling stations in the constituency comprised of one municipality and 16 unions, according to the district election office.

Over 3,000 security personnel, including 2,300 police members, 346 Rab men and 263 BGB men, will remain deployed to check violation of code of conduct in the election area.

Besides, 17 executive magistrates will punish violation of election code of conduct.

The EC on June 10 announced the by-election schedule for the parliamentary constituency. Former minister AKM Mayeedul Islam died on May 11 last.

Besides, the by-polls to the chairman post of Tazumuddin upazila parishad of Bhola district will be held on Wednesday.

Three chairman candidates - Awami League-nominated Fazlul Haque Dewan, BNP-nominated Golam Mostafa Montu and independent contender Nasir Uddin Dulal -- are in the election race.

The Election Commission has taken a five-tier security measure to arrange the by-polls in a peaceful manner, said assistant returning officer Syed Shafiqul Islam.

Some 85,727 voters have voting rights in the election. The balloting will be held from 8:00am to 4:00pm through 33 polling stations.

The upazila chairman post fell vacant as sitting chairman Wahidullah Jashim died on December 31 last.
