Due to favourable weather condition, bumper horseradish production is expected in Joypurhat this current season.

For growing good amount of the vegetable the district is known as horseradish area. The farmers grow the vegetable in a large scale paying their hard labour to meet the local and export demand every season.

The vegetable cultivation boosts their economic condition along with paddy, wheat and maize farming, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Azizur Rahman. Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) as well as the peasants of the district are expecting to make Tk 10 million profit this season.

The trees of the vegetable have already begun flowering from the last week of January across the region amid favourable atmosphere. The vegetable will be harvested very soon in the district.

"From the very begnning of the season, I along with the authority concerned have taken initiative to make the farming a grand success," said farmer Anukul Barbon under Pachbibi upazila. "I am watering the trees every day to get a fresh vegetable," he added.

The trees have been flowered massively predicting bumper production, said another sub-assistant agriculture officer Faridur Rahman. This vegetable will benefit the marginal farmers this season, he added.

During early harvesting season, the farmer generally sell each kg of fresh horse radish at Tk 100 to 120 in the retail market while Tk 80 to 90 in the wholesale markets across the region. Every day, around 5 to 6 trucks loaded with horseradish are exported across the country.

Deputy Director of DAE SM Mefathul Bari said, "We have provided all sorts of necessary agri-input to make the programme a grand success this current season." "Farmers have shown more interest to bring the barren land under sajina cultivation across the area," the DD added.
