In an angry protest triggered by the death of one of their fellows in a road accident, students of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) damaged around 20-25 vehicles in the city's Mirpur area on Monday.

Quoting witnesses, police said Masud Rana, 23, a BBA final year student of the BUBT, was going to his university from his Dakkhin Bishil residence, reports UNB.

Suddenly, a Zoo-bound 'Dishari Paribahan' bus dashed the rickshaw from behind near Eidgah Math of the Zoo Road around 9am, leaving Masud Rana severely injured, said Sub-inspector Anuj Kumar Sarker of Shah Ali Police Station.

Masud was taken to National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), popularly known as Pangu Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead around 9:30 am, he said.

Police seized the bus but its driver fled the scene, the SI added.

As the death news of Masud Rana, son of Syed Jahangir, spread to the BUBT campus, some 200 yards off the place of occurrence, several hundred students of the university along with those of Mirpur Commerce College took to the street and started demonstrations, demanding the arrest of the bus driver.

They also put on barricade on the Sony Cinema Hall crossing around 12:30pm, disrupting vehicular movement from Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-1. The agitating students also damaged around 20-25 vehicles, Anuj said.

Additional police went to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

Later, the students withdrew the blockade around 3:30 pm after getting assurance from police of arresting the driver as soon as possible.
