The country’s telecom regulator in September seized nearly 11,000 SIM cards and Tk 3.7 million equipment in connection with illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business from across the country.
They also arrested eight people while raiding six such business places, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said at a press conference in the city on Monday.
Over 25 million illegal overseas calls are made through illegal VoIP everyday into the country, added the BTRC, which operated its crackdown with the help of the Rapid Action Battalion.
Among the seized SIMs, 5,075 belong to Teletalk, 3,897 Robi, 1,414 Grameenphone, 426 Banglalink, 120 Rankstel, and 15 SIMS Banglalion.
BTRC Chairman Md Jahurul Haque said they are now using the latest technology to detect the illegal VoIP operators around the country.
