BR resumes intercity train service maintaining health guidelines

Intercity train service resumed on Sunday abiding health regulations at stations and launches amid fear of further spreading of coronavirus.

At Kamlapur station, three trains have left following arrivals from Rajshahi, Sylhet and Chattogram till evening. All tickets for all eight inter-city trains which were available through online were sold, said Bangladesh Railway (BR) officials.

While talking with passengers at the station, the FE correspondent found arrangement of every alternate seat for passengers with maintenance of hygiene. 12 cleaners were engaged in disinfecting the trains soon after arrival at the station.

BR has decided to resume its eight set of inter-city trains from Sunday after the government relaxed the public transport movement following the lock down period, although the number of COVID 19 death and infected cases continued to rise.

Banolata Express from Rajshahi was the first train to arrive at Kamlapur Station around 11:30 am and left around 1:30 pm. Kauni express left the station around 3:00pm after arriving around 1:30 pm from Sylhet.

Kamlapur Station expects two more trains to arrive from Panchagarh and Lalmonirhat respectively on Sunday.

Rail Minister Nurul Islam Sujon visited the station at 3:00pm to see overall situation. The minister told journalists that the train services resumed on experimental basis to understand the ability of BR in maintaining health issues while carrying out train operations.

The FE talked with a good number of passengers waiting at the station and found they mostly were going back to work or businesses on the first day of train service. Although they were happy with the first day’s arrangement, but many were worried over the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

The BR is also set to launch 11 more intercity services on June 3. However, all mail and local train services will remain suspended.
