BOGRA, Oct 24: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bogra, has taken an initiative to produce some 2,040 tonnes of turmeric this season across the district.

The DAE office source said the farmers have brought around 580 hectares of land under the farming of the spicy crop this season against the target of 510 hectares fixed by the department.

In a recent visit this correspondent found marginal farmers were rearing the cropland to get a good output. Some farmers said that they would start harvesting the crop from the next month.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said turmeric cultivation is easy. It requires a nominal production cost. "We encourage the growers to cultivate the crop on more lands", he added.

"I have taken some 32 decimal of land under turmeric cultivation in this season spending Tk 5,600," said farmer Jobbar Hossain of Shibganj upazila. He said, "If I get a good yield and satisfactory price this year, I will expand the farming area."

The turmeric of previous year is being sold at Tk 3400 to Tk 3500 per mound in the kitchen market, said wholesaler Yakub Ali of Dupchanchia upazila.
