BIWTA knocks down 590 illegal structures in 19 days

A team of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished a total of 590 illegal structures from Narayanganj river port area in 19 working days.

Of the total 590 illegal structures, the team on Wednesday demolished 25 illegal establishments from the aforesaid area, said a press release.

The 25 illegal structures include a four-storey building, four dockyards, twelve dredger pipes, two boundary walls, one piling jetty and five tin-shed infrastructures.

The eviction team also recovered two acres of land and fined Taka 10,000 in today’s drive, added the release.

During the 19-day drive, the BIWTA team demolished a total of 590 illegal structures, recovered 27.1 acres of land, auctioned goods worth Tk 3.6 million and fined Tk 101 million for illegal occupation, the release added.

The eviction drive would continue to make the river bank free from illegal occupation.

Besides, the Department of Environment (DoE) fined five factories Tk 131,000 for environment pollution in Gazipur and Narsingdi districts.

Rubina Ferdousi, Director of Monitoring and Enforcement wing of DoE led the drives today as a part of anti-pollution campaign, reports BSS.
