BD registers nine more deaths, 309 cases in 24 hours

Nine more people died of the novel coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, in Bangladesh in the 24 hours to 8:00am on Saturday, taking the tally to 140, health authorities have said.

Besides, 309 others were diagnosed with COVID-19 during the same period, taking the number of such cases in the country to 4998, said Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), while briefing the media live at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 3337 samples in the last 24 hours, she said.

Earlier on Friday the DGHS confirmed 503 new coronavirus cases, which is the highest reported in a single day since March 08, when such cases were reported for the first time in the country.

Since it was a weekend yesterday (Friday), some districts couldn’t send their samples for tests; and so this day's new cases were fewer, said Mrs Sultana.

Globally, as of Saturday afternoon, a total of 197,421 people died and 808,024 recovered from the virus disease, according to worldometer.info, a website that provides real-time updates.

Including both the dead and recovered, a total of 2,834,697 have so far infected by the virus, the website data shows.

Again, of 1,829,252 people who are currently infected, 1,770,870 (97 per cent) are in mild condition and the rest 58,382 (3.0 per cent) in serious or critical condition, it adds.

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the COVID-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.

The deadly viral disease has so far infected a total of 210 countries and territories and two international cruise ships around the world.
