Around 250,000 Bangladeshi passport holder Rohingyas, currently residing abroad, are involved in various criminal activities and tarnishing the country’s image, said expatriates’ welfare minister Nurul Islam BSC on Saturday.
“Many Bangladeshi passports holders Rohingyas are engaged in criminal activities there. For this reason, Bangladeshi workers are facing image crisis,” he said.
Mr Islam said it while was speaking as the chief guest at a programme titled ‘World Conference Series 2018: Come and Build your Motherland’ at a city hotel.
Centre for Non Resident Bangladeshis (Centre for NRB) organised the programme.
Although they went abroad for search of jobs, they are sending remittance to Myanmar, he added.
Over jobs in Malaysia, the minister said the crisis was created from Malaysia’s end due to their wrong choice over recruitment agencies.
“Malaysia chose the certain number of recruitment agencies to send workers there. We could not much more oppose the decision for the sake of opening of the market,” he added.
However, now they are trying to defunct this syndicate and give chance to all eligible manpower recruiters, he added.
They also have sent a proposal to the Prime Minister office to increase the exchange rate of migrants’ remittances so that they are encouraged to send their hard-earned money through legal channel.
M S Shekil Chowdhury, chairperson of Centre for NRB presided over the programme.
Abu Hena Mohd. Razee Hassan, deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), president of The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), among others spoke.
A total of 10 commercial banks including Islami, Agrani, Sonali and Janata have been awarded at the programme following their outstanding performances of receiving remittances home.
