Bangladesh warns diplomats against interference in its internal affairs

Bangladesh does not expect interference of foreign diplomats in its internal affairs, said Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.

As development partners, they naturally may have an interest in our election process but we do not want any prescription from them about this, he said while talking to some journalists at his office recently.

Having an interest in something and interfering is not the same thing, the foreign secretary said making it clear that if any diplomat cross the limit, he or she would be warned.

We ourselves need to be restrained also. If we have any problems we should try to resolve it domestically instead of complaining to outsiders, he added.

Asked whether the government will discuss election issues with foreigners, Mr Masud said the foreign ministry is in constant touch with diplomats but Bangladesh does not want interference from them in its domestic affairs.

Foreign Secretary said is scheduled to leave Dhaka on Wednesday for India to join Indo-Bangladesh bilateral meetings to be held in Delhi next week.

A wide range of issues concerning bilateral ties will come up during the meetings, he said.

Preparations for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India will also be discussed, said Masud.

Bangladesh Prime Minister may visit Delhi this year at the invitation of her counterpart.

The foreign secretary will first go to Chennai from where he will head towards New Delhi.

In Chennai, Masud Momen will see the progress of the work as Bangladesh Deputy High Commission is getting operationalized.

The foreign secretary is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Indian counterpart Harsh Vardhan Shringla on February 24.

Masud Momen is likely to meet Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar but it depends on the availability of the Indian Minister, said an official.
