A total of 2,453 people died from coronavirus symptoms from March 22, 2020 to June 22, 2021.
Of the deaths, some 1,994 males and 459 females died within the 15 months period.
The number of such deaths increased significantly this month, from June 09 to 22. Number of fatalities from Covid-19-like symptoms was 2,302 during the period from March 22, 2020 to June 08, 2021.
These were shown in a report prepared by a project styled 'Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO)' under the Centre for Genocide Studies at Dhaka University.
A total of 150 deaths with Covid-19 symptoms were reported in several districts of Khulna and Rajshahi divisions, and one death was reported in Brahmanbaria from June 09 to 22 while deaths with Covid-symptoms increased significantly in Rajshahi and Khulna divisions in June 2021, the report showed.
The peace observatory project has prepared the report based on information from 25 media outlets, including national and local dailies, TV channels, and news portals. However, this information was not verified from the field level.
A total of 128 cases for awarding fines were reported from June 09 to 22 this year. The number is slightly higher than the previous time span-- from May 24, 2021 to June 08, 2021.
Most of the fines were awarded to people for violating health guidelines and not wearing masks. Four diagnostic centres were penalised for forging Covid-19 test reports. No arrest was reported in this timeframe.
According to the report, during the period from March 22, 2020 to June 22, 2021, Dhaka division saw 396 deaths with Covid-19 like symptoms while the number of similar deaths recorded in Chattogram division was 742. Mymensingh division had 64 such deaths, the lowest record, added the BPO report.
Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, and Barishal divisions reported 102, 364, 95, 446, and 244 deaths respectively.
The top 10 districts in terms of deaths from Covid-like symptoms are Cumilla, Rajshahi, Satkhira, Chandpur, Khulna, Chattogram, Dhaka, Barishal, Bogura, and Patuakhali, as per the report.
The highest 252 people died of Covid-like symptoms in Cumilla district while Patuakhali saw the lowest 51 deaths, the report added.
Rajshahi district reported 168 deaths which was the second highest deaths while 167 died in Satkhira placing it the third highest.
The BPO project has been regularly publishing reports on multiple issues with financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
