Bangladesh registers 8,407 new Covid cases, highest in five months

Bangladesh has detected 8,407 more coronavirus cases, the highest daily count since Aug 13, 2021 amid the spread of the contagious omicron variant.

The latest infections took the caseload to 1,632,794, the Directorate General of Health Services said on Tuesday.

The death toll from Covid-19 rose by 10 to 28,164 in the 24 hours to 8 am, reports bdnews24.com.

Among the eight divisions, Dhaka tallied the highest number of cases and deaths, with 6,597 infections and seven fatalities.

Another 475 people recovered from the illness nationwide, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,553,795.

The labs tested 35,054 samples across the country, for a positivity rate of 23.98 per cent.

The latest figures put the recovery rate at 95.16 per cent and the mortality rate at 1.72 per cent.

Globally, over 330.97 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 5.54 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
