Bangladesh passport one of the weakest, shows global index

Bangladeshi passport is the ninth weakest across the globe, as the Henley Passport Index (HPI) has placed it at 103rd position among 111.

The South Asian nation shares the position with Kosovo and Libya, as the passport-holders of these countries can travel to 40 destinations without prior visa.

The UK-based Henley & Partners prepared the index with the list of 199 passports as well as 227 travel destinations that was published online on Tuesday.

As per the Q4 edition of 2021 Index, Bangladesh stood at the 108th position - tied with Kosovo and Libya - among 116 positions in the index, released in last October.

According to the latest edition of the index, Japan and Singapore jointly share the top position with 192 visa-free scores that means the citizen of the two Asian countries can travel to 192 destinations without prior visa.

Germany and South Korea share the second rank with 190 score, while the third position is shared by four countries - Finland, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain with 189 score.

Afghanistan ranked at 111th position with only 26 score, following Syria at 109 and Iraq at 110th.

Henley & Partners in a statement said the index ranks all the world's passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without prior visa, and it is based on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Analysing the historical data the think-tank also said an individual, on an average, could visit 57 countries in 2006 without visa in advance.

"Today, that number has risen to 107, but this overall increase masks a growing disparity between the countries in the global north and those in the global south, with nationals from the countries such as Sweden and the US able to visit more than 180 destinations visa-free, while the passport-holders of Angola, Cameroon, and Laos are able to enter only about 50," it added.
