BD confirms 552 new coronavirus cases, five more deaths

Bangladesh confirmed 552 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 8790.

Meanwhile, five more people died of the lethal disease in the last 24 hours.  With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 175.

Among the deceased, three were male and two female.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 5827 samples in the past 24 hours, she said.

Besides, three more patients made recovery during the period under review, taking the total number of recoveries to 177.

The global death toll from coronavirus has reached 239,652 as of Saturday noon.

There have been 3,402,435 confirmed cases around the world after the highly contagious disease was first reported in China in December last, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of those infected, 2,078,254 are currently being treated with 51,370 being in serious or critical condition.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
