Badiul not right person to comment on EVMs: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujon) General Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar is not the right person to comment on electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The CEC made the remarks at a programme in Barishal on Saturday while talking about Badiul Alam Majumdar's recent comments on EVM technology.

KM Nurul Huda held view exchanging meeting with election commission officials of district and upazila levels at Barishal’s regional election office on Saturday.

In a recent interview, Badiul Alam Majumder had alleged that people do not have confidence on EVMs and the use of EVMs will create lack of confidence in election process.

When reporters asked the CEC whether its use is logical the CEC said, “He (Badiul) is not the proper person to comment on EVM technology. If the election officials lodge any complaint about it, then we will look into it.”

Expressing hope that the upcoming elections will be fair and held peacefully, he said electronic voting machines or EVMs will be used in polls to the two Dhaka City Corporations.

KM Nurul Huda was also hoped that the elections for the two Dhaka city corporations will be competitive.

When his attention was drawn to low voter turnout at the polling centres, KM Nurul Huda said less competitive elections witness such situation.

“It is the election commission’s responsibility to organise peaceful elections and we create that environment in the country.”

EVMs were first used in Bangladesh in the 2012 Chattogram municipality polls. It was later used in Narayanganj and Cumilla polls. The machines were also used in the last general election.
