Arrest warrant against Prothom Alo editor and 9 others

A Dhaka Court on Thursday issued arrest warrant against 10 persons, including Matiur Rahman -- editor and publisher of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, in a case filed in connection with the death of Naimul Abrar Rahat during the anniversary celebration of the newspaper’s youth magazine ‘Kishor Alo’.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Md Kaisarul Islam passed the order.

Earlier on the day, the police submitted a report in the court saying that negligence of the ‘Kishor Alo’ authorities has been found in the investigation over the death of Naimul Abrar Rahat, a  ninth-grader of  Dhaka Residential Model College.

Md Abdul Halim, sub-inspector of Mohammadpur Police Station and also investigation officer of the case, submitted the report on Thursday.

The court issued the arrest warrant after taking the report into cognizance, said Advocate Omar Faruq Asif, a counsel of the plaintiff.

The other accused are--- Prothom Alo’s Associate Editor Anisul Hoque, Kabir Bakul, Shubashis Prmanik, Mohitul Alam, Shah Poran Tushar, Jasim Uddin, Mosharraf Hossain, Md Sujan and Kamrul Howlader.

On November 06, 2019 Naimul’s father Md Mojibur Rahman filed the case with a court of Dhaka alleging that his son died due to the ‘negligence’ of the Kishor Alo authorities.

After hearing the complaint, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (in-charge) Md Aminul Haque recorded the complainant’s statement and also ordered the officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station to submit an investigation report of the case after merging it with another case filed for unnatural death of the ninth-grader. An unnatural death case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station after Naimul’s death.

In the complaint, Mojibur said his son was electrocuted and fell unconscious when he was enjoying a show during the anniversary celebration of the youth magazine Kishor Alo at  Residential Model College at around 3:30 pm on November 01, 2019.

According to the case statement, Naimul’s father stated that his son was taken to Universal Hospital in Mohakhali forty-five minutes after the incident instead of to nearby Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital which is on the opposite side of the Residential Model College.

Doctors of the Universal Hospital declared Naimul dead at 4:51 pm. If Naimul had been taken to the nearby hospital immediately, he could have survived, Mojibur mentioned in the complaint.

Such activities had led his son to death, the complainant added. Mojibur was informed about his son’s death by one of Abrar’s classmates around 7:30 pm on November 01, he said.
