Several hundreds of workers of an export oriented apparel factory in the city took to the streets on Wednesday protesting mass termination of their fellow workers.

Demanding payment of their dues and cancellation of the termination move, the workers of Kaniz Garments Limited blocked road at a key intersection close to the Mohakhali Bus Terminal.

The protest caused immense sufferings to the office goers in the morning as the vehicular movements through the Gulshan Link Road remained almost shut from 8:30am.

Talking to the FE, Md Mamun Sheikh, who works as an ironman in the unit, said the management recently hanged a list of 84 terminated workers in front of its gate of the factory without any prior notice.

As they protested the move, the factory management shut the unit since February 06 last instead of giving any explanation regarding such mass sacking, according to Sheikh.

"We're also receiving threats over mobile phone from various quarters asking not to get involved in any protest," he said.

Another ironman of the unit, Abu Taleb said the management did not provide them any increment, production bonus, overtime bills and payment for not enjoying leaves.

"We want to get back to the work. We don't want protest," he said.

The protestors were chanting slogans for not leaving the place until their demands are met.

However, police intervened at around 10:30am and dispersed the protestors from the road. A police official said they had to clear the road for the sake of smooth traffic movements.

According to the protestors, Kaniz Garments Limited located at Niketon make clothing for various global leading retailers like H&M.
