The government will take stern action against the persons who fail to remove stagnant water from their respective buildings and premises to help stop breeding of aedes mosquito.

Under the move, the local government, rural development and co-operatives (LGRD & Co-operatives) ministry started to take preparations for carrying out drives from the second week of the current month (May).

The drive will help stop or prevent breeding of aedes mosquito during the current month (May) and in the upcoming rainy season.

A high official of the LGRD & Co-operatives ministry told the FE that they will expedite their efforts against aedes mosquito in line with the decisions taken at an inter-ministerial meeting on dengue in the city on Wednesday.

The LGRD & Co-operatives ministry official quoted the minister Md Tajul Islam as saying the government will carry out drives after 10th May.

He said the minister has requested the owners of the houses including public and private buildings to keep their respective houses or buildings neat and clean and free from aedes mosquito by removing stagnant water seen in the roofs, toilet commode and several places of under construction buildings.

Mr Islam (minister) said the department of public works will work to remove stagnant waters in the government buildings.

He said the Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation have sufficient medicines to be used against aedes mosquito.

Aedes mosquito is the carrier of dengue fever.

It (aedes mosquito) breeds in clear water and prefers a subtropical climate and urban or semi-urban landscapes.

The disease is endemic in Bangladesh where heavy rains during the monsoon season create the perfect breeding ground for the mosquito-borne virus, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
