ACC set to conduct sudden drives to check bribery

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is set to conduct sudden inspections to public offices aimed at checking bribery and ensuring hassle free services to the people.

As part of the initiative, the lone anti-graft body has already formed two separate enforcement teams comprising two members each headed by assistant director level officer. A director general (DG) level officer will coordinate the overall activities of the teams.

The commission has already conducted two sudden visits to headquarters of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) on May 17 (Thursday) and today (May 20). The drives were aimed at checking corruption in giving licenses to different food producing factories to ensure standard of foods and hassle free services to the people.

In this regard, ACC's DG (admin) and coordinator of the enforcement teams Munir Chowdhury said, "The trend of taking bribe is usually increased in public offices before the Eid. So, some government offices have been put on surveillance and if necessary action will be taken by setting traps."

Talking to BSS today, ACC's spokesperson and also deputy director (public relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee said, "The commission has so far conducted over 40 trap cases in the last two years, in which, over 40 people including high government officials were arrested."

He also said, the ACC has planned to strengthen the trap case mechanism ahead of the Eid to check bribery in the government offices.

"Two enforcement teams have already been formed to conduct sudden inspection to public offices to prevent bribery. Each of the teams was formed comprising two members and headed by assistant director level officer," he said.

The teams have been entrusted with conducting sudden inspection to public offices to stop bribery and irregularities, he added, according to BSS.
