A total of 61 prisoners died in different jails across the country in the first eight months from January to August of this year, according to an independent rights body.
Among them, 40 were undertrials and 21 others convicted prisoners, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) said in a report published recently.
A total of 75 prisoners died in 2020, its data showed.
In 2019, the number of deaths in jail custody was 58. Of the prisoners, 36 were undertrials and 22 convicts, the independent rights body said.
The ASK report also added that a total of 74 people died in jail custody in the country in 2018. Of them, 45 were undertrials and 29 convicts.
